SHUNTASSISTANT® & paediSHUNTASSISTANT®
FUNCTIONALITY
Both valves are separate gravitational valves which automatically adjust their opening pressure to the body position and thus counteract possible overdrainage in the upright body position. Like all position-dependent valves, they should always be implanted parallel to the body axis. Both can be ideally combined with other, conventional valves (e.g. differential pressure valves). It does not matter whether the MIETHKE SHUNTASSISTANT is placed before or after the differential pressure valve. Also the installation height has no influence on the mode of operation.
Horizontal Position
The SHUNTASSISTANT is open in the lying body position and does not pose any resistance. The opening pressure in horizontal body position is determined exclusively by another differential pressure valve to be used.
Vertical Position
When the patient stands up, the SHUNTASSISTANT is activated: The balls inside the housing close the passage of the valve due to the gravitational forces, thus automatically increasing the opening pressure and protecting the patient from overdrainage while standing. Only when the patient's cerebral pressure increases to such an extent that the opening pressure in the valve is reached, the balls are pushed upwards and release the passage until the cerebral pressure has decreased accordingly. In the vertical position of the body, the total opening pressure is the sum of the opening pressure of the gravitational valve and the opening pressure of another differential pressure valve in use.
